In the Nissan Altima came equipped with an electronic throttle body. Whenever you disconnect the battery or replace the computer or throttle body, you must perform a relearn procedure. The process involves some steps with a cold engine and others with a warmed-up engine. If this step-by-step procedure doesn't restore a smooth idle, it usually indicates some other issue with the engine.
Have the car scanned for trouble codes. Without stepping on the gas pedal, turn the ignition switch to on and wait at least two seconds, then turn the ignition switch off and wait 10 seconds. Turn the ignition switch back on for at least two more seconds, then off again. Turn the ignition switch on again and wait two seconds, then off again for 10 seconds.
Make sure you can hear the electric motor on the throttle moving at this time. It will make a buzzing sound. Start the engine and run it until it gets to operating temperature. Turn the engine off and wait at least 10 seconds. Without pressing the accelerator, turn the ignition on, but don't start the engine, and wait three seconds. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal five times within five seconds, ending with the pedal completely released.
Now press the pedal fully to the floor for 20 seconds, or until the service engine soon light stops blinking and is on solid. Release the pedal within three seconds after the light becomes solid. Start the engine and let it idle, wait 20 seconds, then rev the engine a few times and make sure the idle returns to normal idle speed.

You cannot do this procedure if you have an accelerator pedal position sensor trouble code stored. After the 5 pedal presses, wait 7 seconds and depress the accelerator pedal to the floor again and keep it there for approx.
Release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after malfunction light stops blinking and turns ON steady. You should have a malfunction light after this procedure with trouble code P stored. That confirms the reset was done correctly. Use your code reader or scan tool to clear the code. If any of the following conditions occur after the engine has started, eliminate the cause of the incident and perform Idle Air Volume Learning all.
Unlike the cheaper Haynes and Chilton manuals that cover multiple year models, leaving the exact information you need to fix your car, these professional manuals cover your exact year, make, model.

Tags Nissan idle relearn procedure.Carbon buildup in the throttle body can reach the point where the ECM sets a P trouble code, requiring an idle speed relearn procedure. Late model Nissan engines are equipped with an electronic throttle body.
The ECM commands a throttle plate opening to maintain the lowest possible idle speed based on engine temperature. This is called the target engine speed.
The target speed takes into account factors like engine temperature, declaration, engine loads like AC, power steering, cooling fan and other electrical loads.2006 Nissan Altima Idle Relearn (You need to watch this if you can't get relearn to work)
Over time, carbon builds up on the throttle plate and in the throat of the throttle body, the ECM adjusts throttle plate opening to compensate for the buildup.
At a certain point, the ECM can no longer compensate and sets a P trouble code. You must remove the electronic throttle body to clean it.
Apply throttle body cleaner to a clean rag and wipe the carbon off the throat and throttle plate. The cleaner can wick into the electronics and damage them. Once the throttle body has been cleaned, reinstall on the intake manifold using a new gasket and proper torqueing procedures. Then perform an idle relearn procedure. This is a three step process; Accelerator pedal released learning, then a throttle valve closed position relearning, and finally an idle air volume learning step.
Engine and transmission fully warmed up. Transmission temperature sensor reading must read less than 0. Wait at least 10 seconds and begin the procedure from the start. Let it idle. The real learning process begins once you start the engine, so all the previous steps were designed to put it into learning mode. Unlike the cheaper Haynes and Chilton manuals that cover multiple year models, leaving the exact information you need to fix your car, these professional manuals cover your exact year, make, model.

This memory contains data regarding idle trims, fueling adjustments, adaptive shifting, and many other parameters.
It is constantly updated as the vehicle is driven to account for changes in environment, driving conditions, and even wear on the vehicle. Examples would be: disconnecting the battery, replacing battery or battery cables, a dead battery, or a bad ground.
When KAM is cleared, or battery power is lost, the computer returns to the base parameters set in the calibration, and loses the stored values it has gathered based on driving habits, inputs, and data collected by the vehicle sensors. When this happens it is sometimes necessary to perform an idle relearn to once again teach the car how to idle correctly.
Account 0 Items. Menu Links My Account. Follow these steps to complete an Idle Relearn: With vehicle at a complete stop, set the parking brake. Put gear shifter in "P" Parkturn off all accessories. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Allow engine to idle for at least one minute. Turn the air conditioning on and allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.
Release the parking brake. Drive the vehicle to complete the relearning process. Just make sure you drive easy for the first 30 miles, so the PCM can re-learn and adapt to your driving style.Hello all, Two weeks ago, I replaced my twin-ram intakes with the stock ones that came with the car with some Mishimoto pipes.
On cold start, the car now idles. Help with Idle Air Volume Relearn Procedure Hello all, Two weeks ago, I replaced my twin-ram intakes with the stock ones that came with the car with some Mishimoto pipes. On cold start, the car now idles around rpm instead of ish rpm.
It's been creeping up over the last few starts, I first noticed the high idle a few days ago at around rpm. Throttle response is also very poor. Mine does not, despite following the instructions to the letter. Does anyone know the proper procedure for a 7AT z? Car is tuned with Uprev. Regards, MK. SeanR likes this. See if this could help. Custom ported and CNC throttle bodies, upper and lower manifolds. That is the correct instructions, we did it on my car today but make sure you time the steps.

I think we messed up the first time by turning the car off after step 9. Originally Posted by Trips. Originally Posted by JWillis Originally Posted by T-Rex Oh I know that, but it also steps you thru the re-learn procedure.
I think thats what you were asking for. Mysilverz and SeanR like this. I've searched for this problem on the forums before posting of course, VolkoMysilverz and SeanR like this. Ok, just tried again following instructions in the other thread.
I'm assuming "ON" is on without the engine started. In this state, the battery only reads I'm assuming this is why the procedure doesn't work.Idle Air Volume Learning is an operation to learn the idle air volume that keeps each engine within the specific range. It must be performed under any of the following conditions:. Before performing Idle Air Volume Learning, make sure that all of the following conditions are satisfied.
Learning will be cancelled if any of the following conditions are missed for even a moment. Need A Repair Shop? Disconnect throttle position sensor harness connector brownthen reconnect it within 5 seconds.

Firstly, check the vehicle for any pre-existing trouble codes and make the appropriate repairs. Inspect the PCB system. Inspect the engine for any damaged hoses that could cause a vacuum leak. Special attention should be given to the PCV system, oil dipstick, and filler cap seals for damage.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 30 seconds to reset the onboard computer. Do not perform the relearn if the service engine soon light is on and codes related to the mass airflow sensor, manifold absolute pressure, or incorrect idle speed are found. If everything is in order, we can begin. Third, turn off all accessories such as the air conditioning, rear window defogger, radio, and heater blower to prevent a load on the engine which would cause erroneous positioning of the throttle plate.
Finally, make sure the front wheels of the vehicle are in the neutral position pointing straight ahead. We are now ready to perform the required relearn procedure. Make sure the accelerator pedal is fully released. Turn the ignition switch on without starting the engine for at least 2 seconds. Turn the ignition switch off for at least 10 seconds.
Again, turn the ignition on for at least 2 seconds.

Turn the ignition off for at least 10 seconds. This action will inform the computer on the new release position of the accelerator pedal and the closed position. Now that this is done, we can move on to the next step.
Please make sure to follow these next instructions precisely as every action is performed within a few seconds. Turn the ignition switch on and wait 3 seconds.
Immediately after the 3 seconds, the accelerator pedal must be pressed and released 5 times within 5 seconds. Wait 7 seconds and fully press the accelerator pedal and hold for approximately 20 seconds until the check engine light stops blinking and stays on.
Within 3 seconds after the check engine light stays constantly on, release the accelerator pedal. Now start the engine and let it idle. After 20 seconds, rev up the engine a couple of times to ensure idle speed is within specifications. If the relearn was unsuccessful, turn the key to the off position wait 60 seconds and restart the process. Thank you for watching.
